Upon moving to Berlin, having accepted a professorship at the Hochschule für Musik, Dohnányi wrote Winterreigen (Winter Rounds or Winter Round Dances) as a farewell to his previous hometown of Vienna. Aside from the first and last movements, each piece within this volume is dedicated to a particular friend in Vienna. In the final movement, Dohnányi borrows Robert Schumann’s trick of spelling out the pitches A-D-E, the German version of ‘Adieu’.
