Prokofiev’s fourth piano concerto was commissioned by 1-arm pianist Paul Wittgenstein. This is Prokofiev’s only work for piano that wasn’t premiered during his lifetime; it was first performed in 1958, by Rudolf Serkin and the Philadelphia Orchestra under Eugene Ormandy. Designed to be played exclusively with the left hand, this unique work is a triumph of Prokofiev’s ingenuity.
