Martinů’s first, and only, piano sonata is undoubtedly his most serious work for the instrument. The piece is characterized by the dramatic tension and dissonant harmonies that pervade the piece, however, one can detect strong influences of Romantic composers such as Rachmaninoff and Brahms.
