While Der Schneemann (The Snowman) was originally written for piano when the composer was just 13 years old, the orchestral version was an enormously popular part of the early 20th-century repertoire. Richard Strauss and Gustav Mahler were among those who praised Erich Wolfgang Korngold as the premiere musical prodigy of his generation. Based on a comedic story written by the composer’s father, this piece is characteristic of late Romanticism and strongly influenced by Viennese dance-music.
