Enescu wrote this sonata during a time of great personal duress. He had recently traveled from Paris to Bucharest to care for his future wife, Maruca Cantacuzino, who was suffering from a mental collapse. Despite the stressful and unhappy circumstance, Edmund Fleg, librettist of Enescu’s opera Œdipe, remarked that the sonata was “full of gaiety, in complete contrast with the atmosphere which surrounds it!”
