Those familiar with Charles Ives’ music will know he was a champion of dissonance. A note Ives attached to a copy of this piece, says that the sonata was “made mostly as a joke to knock the mollycoddles out of [the audience’s] boxes and to kick out the soft ears”. This angular and bold piece is certainly a shock to the ears, however, when performed it is lively and enthusiastic. Don’t be fooled by the title, this work makes a substantial and challenging addition to anyone’s repertoire.
