Most musicians are familiar with the ongoing debate between the two solfege systems; “moveable-Do” and “fixed-Do”. In the moveable-Do system, “Do” refers to the tonic of whatever key the music is in, therefore changing with modulation. Fixed-Do refers to the system in which “Do” is always C. In this piece, the “immovable-Do” that the title refers to is a high drone on C throughout the entire piece. According to Grainger, “this music hinges upon intervallic appeal.” Grainger’s musical creativity and renowned humour shines through in The Immovable Do (also known as The Cyphering C).
