These 4 studies were designed to challenge the performer with rhythmic complexity. Each etude focuses on a specific rhythmic peculiarity; the first study in C minor opposes triplets against quintuplets and septuplets, the second study in D major (in 6/8 time) has sixteenth notes against quadruplets or quintuplets, the third study in E minor is the least polyrhythmic instead focusing on a high melodic line, and the fourth study in F-sharp major concentrates on syncopation. These exercises are great ways for musicians to push their extremes of polyrhythm performance.
