The inception of Ives’ first piano sonata began in 1898 as he improvised on the piano in his New York apartment, having just graduated from Yale University. This piece is infamous for its difficulty and length; perhaps that is why it has to wait to be premiered until 1949, when it was finally performed by William Masselos. Of this work, Ives said, “[it’s] mostly about the outdoor life in Connecticut villages in the [18]80s and [18]90s”.
