Stravinsky’s ballet Petrushka tells the story of three puppets – Petrushka, the Ballerina, and the Moor – who are brought to life by the Charlatan during the 1830 Shrovetide fair in St. Petersberg, Russia. Petrushka falls hopelessly in love with the beautiful Ballerina, who rejects him in favour of the dashing Moor. Petrushka challenges the Moor, but is killed. As day recedes into night Petrushka’s ghost rises over the theatre to condemn the Charlatan for bringing him to life in the first place, and then collapses into a second and final death. Dealing with the very human emotions of love, envy, and rage, Petrushka is a powerful synthesis of music, ballet, and history.
