Grainger’s “In a Nutshell” was originally written for full orchestra with extra percussion instruments behind a solo piano. This edition has been reduced to solo piano by the composer himself for use on recital programs. The movements from the suite are:
- No.1 Arrival Platform Humlet: Awaiting the arrival of a late train that is bringing your sweetheart from a foreign land;
- No.2 Gay but Whitful: A tune in a popular London Style (as is from a music hall)
- No.3 Pastoral: For Grainger’s dear friend Cyril Scott
- No.4 The Gum Sucker’s March: named for the nick-name of Australians hailing from the state of Victoria, the home state of the composer
