Rachmaninoff’s Etudes-Tableaux (Op.33 & Op.39) were written as musical representations of visual stimuli. Rachmaninoff kept the precise inspirations for his compositions a secret, allowing the listener to “paint for themselves what it most suggests”. The 17 etudes contained in this volume could be performed as an entire suite, or used individually to create the desired musical picture.
