In his Sonata for Piano, Bloch infuses the traditional sonata form with impressionistic sonority. The piece, written in 1935 by a European Jew, seems to anticipate the looming horror of the atrocities of the Second World War. The music is dramatic, but restrained enough to maintain its seriousness. The florid and delicate second movement stands out against the imposing outer movements.
