Italian born Muzio Clementi (1752-1832) was a renowned pianist, composer, pedagogue, conductor, publisher, editor, and piano manufacturer. On his extensive concert tours of Europe, Clementi engaged in concerts and competitions with the best musicians of the time – including the young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who used one of Clementi’s motifs in his overture to The Magic Flute.
Despite his incredible performance career, Clementi is most celebrated for his educational and compositional output. Beethoven was one of Clementi’s biggest fans, often practicing and drawing influence from Clementi’s sonatas and sonatinas. Other legends of the piano, including Czerny, Chopin, and Horowitz, had the highest regard for Clementi’s work, often using them as ‘required materials’ for their own pupils.
